Nairobi United Midfielder, Kevin Wangaya, has been named the SportPesa Premier League Player of the Month for April, after a series of stand-out performances that helped his side remain unbeaten during the month.
The 20 year-old Kenya U20 international received a customized trophy and a cash prize of Sh50,000 during an award ceremony attended by teammates, coaching staff, and sports officials, including Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK), President James Waindi.
Wangaya thanked his teammates, coaches and support staff for helping shape his development and motivating him throughout the season.
“I am really honoured to win this Award. Seeing Humphrey Aroko win it earlier in the season was a big motivation, it showed what’s possible. I’ve just stayed focused, worked hard, and I’m happy to see it paying-off,” said Wangaya.
The talented Midfielder becomes the second-youngest player to win the accolade after Humphrey Aroko of Kariobangi Sharks, who won the Award in February at age 17.
Wangaya enjoyed an impressive April campaign, scoring three goals and providing three assists in five matches.
He opened the scoring against Mathare United, Posta Rangers, and Mara Sugar, helping Nairobi United take early control in those matches.
One of his most memorable performances came against Murang’a Seal, where he provided two assists as Nairobi United fought back from 2-0 down to secure a thrilling 4-2 victory.
“I just try to be ready from the first whistle. If we start strong, the whole team grows into the game. But more importantly, we’re fighting for results, and every contribution counts,” he added.
The runners-up for the monthly award were Daniel Ogembo of Police FC, who kept four clean sheets, and Nairobi United striker, Michael Karamor, who scored five goals during the Month.
Head Coach Godfrey ‘Solo’ Oduor praised Wangaya’s growth and mentality, expressing confidence that the youngster has the potential to reach greater heights.
“He’s been decisive for us, he’s growing in confidence, and this is just the beginning if he stays consistent and hungry,” said Oduor.
Nairobi United will now shift focus to their upcoming league clash against Kariobangi Sharks, a fixture that is expected to feature an exciting battle between Wangaya and fellow rising star Humphrey Aroko.
