Kisumu County Government has officially launched a Sh19 million State- of- the Art maternity theatre at the Kisumu County Referral Hospital (KCRH), aimed at enhancing maternal and child health services in the area.
The facility was inaugurated by the area Deputy Governor (DG) Dr. Matthew Owili, who reaffirmed the county’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and patient welfare.
The new maternity theatre is equipped with modern medical equipment and staffed by highly skilled practitioners. It is designed to handle both routine and emergency procedures, ensuring timely and efficient care for mothers and infants.
Owili stated that the investment aligns with the county’s mission to make quality healthcare accessible to all, emphasizing that health is the greatest wealth.
At the same time, the DG noted that the recent elevation of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital to a Level 6 status, has further solidified Kisumu’s position as a regional hub of medical excellence.
The county had equally invested heavily in training and deployment of specialists including two general surgeons, three obstetricians, two physicians and one pediatrician at the Kisumu County Referral hospital (KCRH).
The DG also announced plans to lay the foundation for a new in-patient complex at KCRH, which will bring all wards together under one block. The complex, the DG added, will provide a serene and patient-centered environment, further improving comfort and recovery outcomes.
As part of Kisumu’s broader healthcare transformation agenda, Owili also underscored the importance of digitization in strengthening accountability and efficiency.
He revealed that the county was in the final stages of implementing a fully integrated digital health information system that will connect health units to referral facilities.
According to him, 80 percent of the system’s development was complete, with full implementation expected by November 2025.
The initiative will streamline patient data, improve coordination and ensure that every patient’s journey is safe, connected and centered around their needs.
In addition, KCRH will soon transition to the Taifa Care platform, a countywide digital infrastructure that will unify health services and enhance patient management.
The DG also reiterated the county administration’s ambition to elevate KCRH to a Level 5 facility, both in terms of infrastructure and functionality, urging the public to support their modernization efforts.
“We remain steadfast in driving meaningful change. One project, one innovation and one life at a time,” he said.
Meanwhile, the devolved entity had commenced consultations, aimed at improving patients flow, while ensuring operational efficiency and quality services, thus reinforcing Kisumu’s long-term goal of becoming a model centre of medical excellence in the region.
