Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has assured residents that the Government agencies were piecing up circumstances surrounding the discovery of human remains within Mwingi Township.
Addressing the media at his office boardroom, Governor Malombe assured that those responsible for the bizarre burial of human remains were brought to book and justice was served to the victims.
He described the incidents as deeply disturbing and acknowledged the anxiety the grisly findings brought left residents of Mwingi, Kitui County and the country at large in shock.
The Governor revealed that the latest incident was reported on June 8th, 2026, following information regarding suspected human remains buried in shallow graves opposite Mwingi Catholic Church and near the Mwingi–Garissa Highway.
A multi-agency team comprising of officers from the County Ministry of Health, the National Police Service, the National Government Administration and other relevant agencies visited the site under court authority and confirmed the existence of four shallow graves. The team subsequently recovered four human remains believed to belong to unknown persons.
“The identities of the deceased, their ages and the causes of death have not yet been established and remain a subject of ongoing investigations,” Governor Malombe stated.
The latest recovery follows earlier discoveries within the same locality. On April 28, 2026, the body of an unidentified adult male was recovered in Kanginga area of Mwingi Township. On May 25, 2026, two additional human remains were recovered from the same area, comprising the body of a male and a severed female head, while the remainder of the female body has yet to be found.
The Governor noted that the latest discoveries bring the total number of human remains recovered within the broader Mwingi Township area over the past six weeks to seven.
He disclosed that immediately after confirmation of the latest discovery, security agencies secured the scene to preserve evidence and support investigations. In line with legal and public health requirements, the remains were exhumed, documented and transferred to Mwingi Level IV Hospital Mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.
To strengthen investigations and facilitate identification of the deceased, the County Government of Kitui, in collaboration with the National Police Service and other relevant agencies, is facilitating the transfer of all seven recovered bodies to Nairobi’s City Mortuary for comprehensive forensic analysis.
Governor Malombe said the detailed forensic examinations and post-mortem procedures will assist investigators in establishing the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
He reassured residents that their safety and security remain a top priority, noting that although criminal investigations fall under the mandate of national government security authorities, the county government remains fully committed to supporting all efforts aimed at uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability.
The Governor urged residents to remain calm, avoid speculation and refrain from spreading unverified information that could interfere with ongoing investigations. He further appealed to anyone with information that may assist investigators to report it to the nearest police station or administrative office.
On behalf of the County Government of Kitui, Governor Malombe extended his sympathies to any families that may ultimately be affected by the tragic discoveries and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to keeping the public informed as investigations progress.
He also called on residents to remain united, vigilant and committed to protecting the peace, safety and dignity of every resident of Kitui County and the nation at large.
