Muslims across Vihiga County Wednesday gathered at different parts of the county to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha through special prayers, animal sacrifices and acts of charity.
During the occasion, religious leaders, Muslims and political leaders called for unity, peace and support for the needy during the day dubbed Islamic festival of sacrifice.
A Muslim resident of Mbale region Abdulzarak Khamisi said that Eid-Ul-Adha is a celebration centered on animal sacrifice, meant to remember the story of Prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice his son.
He explained that the practice known as Qurbani or Udhiya, is a way of giving thanks to Allah, though it is not obligatory for those who cannot afford it.
In preparation, he noted that people observe the first nine days leading up to Eid, buy livestock, and slaughter the animals only after the Eid prayers.
He added that the celebration is open to everyone in the community and that Muslims do not discriminate against non-Muslims from participating.
On sharing meat, he said it was important because it allowed everyone and particularly the needy to celebrate the day.
He described the key values of Eid as sharing, love, fear of Allah and giving to the poor and challenged able Muslims to share with the needy.
Vihiga County governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo wished all Muslims a happy Eid saying: “To all Muslims across our great county, I join you in celebrating this holy day of Eid-Ul-Adha. Today reminds us of the strength of faith, the beauty of sacrifice and the power of unity.
As you gather with loved ones share meals and extend generosity to those in need. May your acts of kindness inspire all of us to build a more caring and compassionate community.
May Allah bless your families with peace, good health and prosperity.”
On his part Luanda MP Dick Maungu also wished all Muslims and their loved ones a Happy Eid-Ul-Adha stressing: “May this Eid-ul-Adha bring peace, blessings, good health and prosperity to you and your families.”
Let us continue to uphold the values of faith, unity, compassion and service to humanity. May Allah accept our sacrifices, forgive our shortcomings and bless us all with peace and happiness, he added.
Muslims in Vihiga County gathered at Idavaga Muslim School in Mbale to observe Eid-Ul-Adha prayers, joining millions worldwide in marking the Islamic festival of sacrifice.
