Over 200 football teams in Kiambu to get sponsorship

More than 200 grassroots football teams in Kiambu County are set to benefit from a Sh2.7 million sponsorship package disbursed by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Kiambu Branch, to support participation in local football tournaments.

Speaking after the release of the funds to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), Kiambu Branch, Governor Kimani Wamatangi, said the sponsorship was aimed at empowering young people and strengthening grassroots football structures.

“Football has the power to transform lives, unite communities and create opportunities for our young people. As a County government, we are committed to supporting grassroots talent and ensuring our youth have platforms to grow and achieve their dreams,” said Wamatangi.

The sponsorship will benefit over 200 grassroots football teams affiliated with FKF Kiambu Branch, by covering their affiliation fees, a major challenge that has hindered many clubs from participating effectively in County and Regional competitions.

The funding is expected to ease the financial burden on community teams, while boosting youth participation in sports and talent development programs.

FKF Kiambu Branch Chairman, Danson Njuguna, hailed the County government for fulfilling the pledge, saying the football fraternity, had received the news with gratitude and optimism.

“On December 7, 2025, the Governor made a sponsorship commitment of Sh2.7 million, and in May of this year the funds finally reflected in our account. We are deeply grateful for the support towards the beautiful game of football and other infrastructural initiatives within the County,” said Njuguna.

He assured the County government that the funds would be utilized in a transparent and accountable manner for the benefit of football development across Kiambu.

Njuguna noted that many grassroots teams struggle annually, to raise affiliation fees, forcing some clubs to withdraw from competitions, despite having talented players.

The sponsorship is now expected to keep more teams active in league football, while opening-up opportunities for young athletes to showcase and develop their talent.

The sponsorship is expected to provide a major boost to grassroots football in Kiambu, by enabling more teams to participate in organized competitions and strengthening local talent development structures across the County.

FKF Kiambu Branch oversees one of the most active grassroots football networks in the region, with hundreds of teams participating in various local competitions, aimed at nurturing future football stars.

The sponsorship comes at a time when the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), has intensified efforts to strengthen grassroots football development across the country. According to FKF, the 2024/2025 Youth League attracted more than 700 teams from different regions nationwide, highlighting the growing interest in structured youth football competitions in Kenya
