Police in Nyandarua North Sub County are investigating an incident where three children died after their timber house caught fire in Mutitu village, Leshau area in Ndaragwa Constituency on Wednesday evening.
Confirming the incident, area Deputy County Commissioner Walter Ngaira said that the three children aged between three and 15 years were burnt beyond recognition in the 3pm inferno.
“The police have not been able to establish the cause of fire at the moment but we have launched a probe to it.
A three year old girl and six –year-old boy died alongside a 15-year-old disabled boy who was their uncle,” said the DCC.
The administrator noted that the three had been left home by Sarah Wangari, mother to the 15-year old and granny to the other two when she went shopping at a nearby shopping centre.
According to the neighbours, efforts to put out the fire proved futile as the situation was worsened by the strong winds that were blowing at the time of the incident.
“I had only been away for about 15 minutes when I received a call that my house was on fire. I had left the three children in the house to buy airtime at nearby shopping centre,” wailed Wangari.
She noted that she was not sure what could have started the inferno as there was no lighted source of fire when she left the house.
The bodies of the three children were taken to Nyahururu County Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
