Central Regional Commissioner, Joshua Nkanatha, has called on public servants to adhere to public service rules and regulations to ensure citizens receive quality services as outlined in the service charters.
Speaking during a heads of departments meeting at the Kirinyaga County Commissioner’s headquarters, Nkanatha emphasized the need to curb lateness and absenteeism among government officers.
He challenged all departmental heads to consistently attend county development meetings, noting that discipline and accountability are key to service delivery.
“You realize that probably the people we are supervising report on duty very late and leave early, we are supposed to report at 8am and leave at 5pm. In case there is a lot of work which needs to be done in a particular period of time and you need an extension of working hours, you must get that permission from your accounting officer in writing. You cannot decide by yourself to work until 9 pm in a government office,” Nkanatha said adding that only the police service operates on a 24-hour basis.
He further directed officers to proactively share information with the public using all available communication channels to ensure adequate publicity of government projects.
The administrator underscored the fact that government’s efforts often go unnoticed due to poor dissemination of information.
“It is our duty to ensure the public is aware of all National Government projects being undertaken by different departments. Many times, people complain that the government is doing nothing, yet when you go to the ground, you realize a lot of work is ongoing. What has been lacking is sufficient publicity,” the Commissioner noted.
On corruption, Nkanatha warned officers that they would be held accountable for both their actions and inactions.
“We are going to hold officers accountable for their actions, we are not going to allow ourselves to sit and allow people to engage in corrupt practices”, stated Nkanatha.
The commissioner urged all government departments to embrace a multi-agency approach and share available resources to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery.
