The County Government of Kiambu has intensified efforts to prevent flooding and enhance water management, with the desilting of OJ River in Ruiru taking centre stage.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water, Environment, and Natural Resources, David Kuria, supervised the ongoing desilting exercise of the OJ River, a key tributary of the Kiu River, being undertaken by Ruiru-Juja Water & Sewerage Company (RUJWASCO) under the leadership of Governor Kimani Wamatangi.
The exercise, which involves removing silt and debris that have accumulated in the riverbed, aims to improve water flow and prevent flooding in surrounding communities. RUJWASCO is also expanding nearby streams that tend to overflow during heavy rains and plans to plant water-friendly tree species along the riverbanks to enhance natural water absorption and reduce erosion.
Speaking during the supervision, CECM Kuria urged residents to avoid building on riparian land, warning that illegal encroachments contribute significantly to flooding and environmental degradation. “We must protect our rivers and their natural flow paths. Building on riparian zones blocks waterways and exposes our communities to unnecessary risks,” he said.
The initiative comes in response to the devastating floods of 2024, when OJ River burst its banks, causing widespread destruction and displacement of families. Many residents lost property and livelihoods as water swept through homes, farms, and businesses.
Experts have emphasized that desilting plays a critical role in restoring river capacity, preventing blockages, and ensuring that excess rainwater can safely drain during storms. The exercise not only mitigates the risk of flooding but also supports the long-term sustainability of the river ecosystem, which provides essential water resources for domestic, agricultural, and industrial use.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s administration has made water resource management and disaster preparedness top priorities in its development agenda. Through such projects, the county aims to strengthen resilience against climate-related disasters while promoting environmental conservation.
“Desilting is not just about removing silt — it’s about securing lives, protecting livelihoods, and preserving the environment for future generations,” CECM Kuria added, reaffirming the county’s commitment to proactive water management measures.
With continued collaboration between RUJWASCO, the county government, and local communities, Kiambu is taking firm steps towards a safer and more sustainable water supply.
