Three die following heavy rains in Makueni

Three people including a two- year- old child drowned in separate incidents in Makueni on Sunday following heavy rains.

In the first incident, Mary Mumbi,2, drowned in a well at their home in Ngiluni village, Mukaa Sub County.

The County Police Commander Joseph Ole Naipeyan said the child was trying to fetch water on Sunday evening when she slipped into the well and drowned.

In the second incident, Keli Matata,22, was swept away by raging waters at river Muoni in Mbitini area, Nzaui Sub County.

Naipeyan said the deceased tried crossing the flooded river while drunk last night and the body was found floating downstream on Sunday at around 8.30am.

“Matata was on a drinking spree on Saturday night at Kalongo market but did not return home and police suspect that he was swept when he was crossing the river,” said the county commander.

He said the two bodies have been retrieved and taken to Kilome Nursing Home mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Elsewhere, 65- year- old Kaindi Ndambuki drowned while crossing a flooded river Kanyo in Katikomu village, Kilungu Sub County.

Ole Naipeyan said the body was also found on Sunday morning floating in the flooded river.

About 19 people in Makueni have died due to flood related incidents.

Although rains had subsided in the past one week, the county has experienced heavy rains since Saturday night making many roads inaccessible.
