Three people died on the spot after a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a multiple-vehicle accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Mukaa Sub- County on Saturday.
The crash occurred at 2:30 pm at Mlima Kiu near Rubis Petrol Station in Kiima Kiu Sub-location, Malili Division, when a driver of a Mercedes Benz Actros truck, registration KCB 424A/ZA3311, overtook a fleet of vehicles recklessly and collided with five other motor vehicles.
Mukaa Sub- County Police Commander Abduba Hussein confirmed the incident to Kenya News Agency on Sunday morning.
“It happened when the unknown driver, who escaped after the accident, was driving from Nairobi towards Mombasa. Upon reaching the location, without due care, he overtook a fleet of vehicles, hitting five motor vehicles,” Hussein explained.
In the process, the driver collided sideways with a Mercedes Benz Actros truck KCF 452V/ZE 3096, lost control, then hit a Honda KDS 838V, followed by an Isuzu FRR truck KCV 701R, and finally collided head-on with a Nissan Matatu KDE 680K belonging to Naekana Sacco, killing three passengers instantly.
The injured were rushed to Sultan Hamud Sub- County Hospital for treatment of broken limbs and other injuries sustained in the crash, including fractures to legs, hands, neck, head, and shoulders.
Hussein noted that the accident occurred on a steep hill while it was raining, urging motorists to observe traffic rules to prevent loss of lives.
The badly damaged vehicles were towed to Salama Police Station, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kilungu Sub- County Mortuary pending autopsy.
In a separate incident later the same day, a pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle that failed to stop at Kautandini area along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway at around 8:55 pm.
Hussein confirmed that the body was taken to Kilungu Sub- County Hospital Mortuary for preservation, and police are making efforts to trace the vehicle and identify the deceased.
