Traders and shoppers in Vihiga County are set to enjoy modern, secure, and organised business facilities following the groundbreaking of Gambogi and Cheptulu ESP Markets.
The projects are a joint initiative by the County Government of Vihiga and the National Government.
The markets are part of President William Ruto’s national programme to construct 400 modern markets across the country.
The initiative is already underway in Luanda, Esibuye, Esirulo Majengo, Mbale, and Banja.
The Gambogi and Cheptulu markets will feature 200 modern stalls, ablution blocks with septic tanks, a 30,000-litre elevated water tank connected to a solarized borehole, an ICT hub, social hall, market management office, crèche and toddlers’ playroom, CCTV cameras, and security fencing.
They will also include loading zones, service roads, parking, and Bodaboda sheds to ensure smooth operations and safety.
County Executive Committee Member for Commerce, Tourism and Cooperatives, Joseph Lunani said the markets are designed to improve trader efficiency, hygiene, and order while ensuring the comfort and security of shoppers.
He added that the projects mark a significant step towards a modernised marketplace ecosystem that will strengthen grassroots trade and enhance livelihoods in Vihiga County.
