Sotik MP Francis Sigei has called upon Kenyans, who are not yet registered as voters to take advantage of the ongoing national voter registration exercise, so as to enable them participate during the 2027 general election.
Sigei particularly urged that youth, who have turned 18 years of age to turn out and register during the continuous voter registration that commenced last month under the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Speaking in Bomet town, the MP noted that by the close of the first week of the exercise, only 7000 new voters had been registered countrywide, against a target of 6.3 million.
He said that the overall turnout was low and asked all Kenyans, who are not yet registered to make it their civic duty and visit the nearest registration centres.
The 6.3 million new voters’ target is based on the number of Kenyans, who have acquired national Identification cards, since the last voter registration, which was carried out, ahead of the 2022 election.
At the same time, Sigei observed that a number of youth who had applied for their national identification cards, were yet to collect them from their respective registration officers, thus making it impossible for them to register as voters.
He urged the relevant government officials to facilitate the delivery of the ID cards to their respective owners, who may be finding it difficult to travel to the various registration offices to collect them.
