A 25-year-old man died after being trampled by a rogue elephant in Torosei area, Kajiado West Constituency.
The deceased, identified as Stephen Siamito Kinyanjui, was reportedly herding cattle when the sad incident occurred.
Confirming the incident, Kenya Wildlife Service Assistant Director, Francis Mbaka, said the body had been moved to Kajiado County Referral Hospital mortuary.
Mbaka noted that a response team has been deployed on the ground and is working closely with the local community to identify and track the elephant responsible.
He added that KWS is also liaising with the deceased’s family to support burial arrangements.
As part of long-term measures to address rising cases of human-wildlife conflict in the area, Mbaka said the Service had stationed a permanent team at Olooltepes Shopping Centre.
“We conduct periodic aerial surveillance to monitor elephant movements, drive them away from human settlements, and alert residents in advance,” he said.
He further explained that water scarcity remains a key factor driving elephants closer to human settlements.
“To address this, we are implementing community water projects, including desilting existing dams and constructing new ones to ensure adequate water for both residents and wildlife,” Mbaka added.
Residents were urged to report wildlife-related incidents through the KWS toll-free code *202*09# to facilitate prompt response and access to compensation services.
In a petition presented to Parliament in March 2026, Kajiado West Member of Parliament George Sunkuyia raised concern over escalating human-wildlife conflict in the region.
He termed the situation a growing humanitarian, economic, and environmental crisis and called on the Public Petitions Committee to engage KWS and other relevant government agencies to urgently address the issue.
