The Government has allocated Sh2.3 billion to expand electricity access across Kakamega County targeting about 34,000 households.
President William Ruto, who announced the funding during his development tour today in Butere, said the investment is part of the government’s effort to ensure every Kenyan home has access to reliable and affordable electricity.
He noted that improved connectivity will spur rural development, enhance learning in schools and promote security in the villages.
The programme will be implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) in collaboration with Kenya Power.
The President directed the two agencies to fast-track the projects to ensure timely completion and delivery of power to all targeted homes.
Ruto said his Government will prioritise investments that uplift ordinary citizens and promote equitable development across the country.
He emphasised that access to electricity will enable small businesses to thrive and expand opportunities for the residents especially the youth.
The President was accompanied by several Western Kenya leaders led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and SMEs Wycliffe Oparanya, area MP Tindi Mwale and Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda, among others.
The Western leaders welcomed the government’s commitment noting that the project will open up economic opportunities and improve the quality of life for thousands of residents.
