Ngenda Hospital to transform healthcare access in Gatundu South

Residents of Kwa Mwangi Ward in Gatundu South Constituency are set to benefit from improved healthcare services following the construction of Ngenda Level 3 Hospital, a project aimed at enhancing access to medical care in the area.

The facility, funded through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) in partnership with the Kiambu County Government, has been developed at an estimated cost of Sh45 million.

For years, residents have been forced to travel long distances to access healthcare services at higher-level facilities, a situation that has posed challenges, especially during medical emergencies.

However, the completion of Ngenda Level 3 Hospital is expected to ease this burden by bringing essential services closer to the community.

Speaking during an inspection of the project, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi said the hospital will help address challenges associated with distance and accessibility to healthcare.

“We are committed to ensuring that residents can access quality healthcare services within their locality. This facility will reduce the need for long-distance travel, especially for expectant mothers and emergency cases,” said the Governor.

A County Health official, Teresia Wanjiru, said the facility will be equipped to handle maternity, outpatient, and emergency services.

“This hospital will provide comprehensive services, including maternity, laboratory, pharmacy, and consultation, ensuring residents receive timely and quality healthcare,” she said.

The construction phase of the hospital also provided employment opportunities to over 80 local youth and artisans, contributing to the local economy.

Residents have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that it will transform healthcare access in the area.

Beatrice Njeri, a community health volunteer, said the hospital will greatly improve maternal health services. “Previously, women had to travel long distances to deliver, sometimes facing complications on the way. This facility will make a big difference,” she said.

On his part, a local student, Kimani Kelvin, noted that the presence of the hospital will enhance safety and access to treatment. “In case of illness, we now have a nearby facility where we can get help quickly,” he said.

The hospital, constructed within 14 months, is expected to decongest Level 4 hospitals in the region and improve service delivery once fully operational.
