A Tuesday evening traffic accident in Homabay Town claimed the life of a handcart operator after he was run over by a lorry.
The unidentified man was reportedly pulling his cart, moving towards the pier area along the Homa Bay-Kendubay road, when he suddenly slowed down to avoid running into a grader that was reversing in front.
According to witnesses, a sand-laden lorry, which was approaching from behind, failed to break on time and ran over him.
Geoffrey Ochogo, a witness, said the cart operator was fatally injured and died on the spot in the grisly accident.
“The cart operator was coming from one side, the lorry, which was carrying sand, from behind him, and a grader in front. All of a sudden, as the deceased was slowing down, the lorry ran over him and his cart, rendering him dead,” said Ochogo.
Homa Bay Township Assistant Chief Salim Nyauke said authorities are yet to establish the identity of the deceased before notifying his family.
The body has since been transferred to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital mortuary.
