Kericho mourns slain Litein teen as calls for justice intensify

Kericho County Assembly Speaker Dr Patrick C. Mutai, on Saturday evening, joined grieving family members, friends and residents of Lalagin Village in Litein Ward, Bureti Constituency, to mourn the tragic death of 19-year-old Ivyne Chepkoech Cheche, whose brutal murder has sent shockwaves across the county.

Speaking during the emotional gathering at the family home, Dr Mutai described the murder as a heartbreaking and senseless act that has robbed a young girl of a promising future filled with hope, dreams and opportunity.

“With heavy hearts, we stand with the family of Ivyne Chepkoech Cheche during this painful moment. Her life was full of love, laughter and dreams that were cruelly cut short. We trust that the law will take its course and those behind this heinous act will face justice,” said Dr Mutai.

The 19-year-old, remembered by relatives and neighbours as humble, hard-working and full of ambition, was allegedly murdered in circumstances that have left residents of Lalagin Village demanding swift investigations and accountability from law enforcement agencies.

Family members described Cheche as a bright young woman with aspirations of building a successful future and uplifting her family. Her death has plunged the quiet village into mourning, with residents struggling to come to terms with the loss.

Leaders and mourners who attended the vigil condemned the increasing cases of violent crimes targeting young women and called for enhanced community policing, improved security surveillance and timely response from investigative agencies.

Dr Mutai urged security agencies to move with speed in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the murder, saying justice for the slain teenager would not only bring closure to the family but also reassure the public of the government’s commitment to protecting lives.

“We cannot allow our communities to live in fear. Every life matters, and the perpetrators of such barbaric acts must be brought to book,” he said.

He further called on residents to cooperate with investigators by sharing any information that could assist in apprehending suspects.

As candles flickered in remembrance and prayers filled the air, mourners eulogised Cheche as a cheerful and compassionate soul whose untimely death has left an irreplaceable void.

“Cheche was a daughter to the whole village. We have lost a gem,” said one grieving resident.

Her burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family after consultations.

Cheche death comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over violent crime and murder cases reported in Kericho County over recent months.

In March this year, a Kericho man was arraigned before the High Court for allegedly killing his 100-year-old mother in Sigowet Sub-County, a case that shocked residents across the region and highlighted concerns over domestic violence-related killings.

Earlier, the county also drew national attention following investigations into the controversial discovery of illegally buried bodies at Makaburini cemetery in Kericho town, prompting heightened scrutiny on criminal investigations and public safety systems.

Security experts have attributed rising violent incidents in parts of the county to a combination of social pressures, unresolved domestic conflicts, substance abuse and gaps in community intelligence sharing.

Local leaders have repeatedly urged residents to embrace peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms while encouraging youth empowerment programmes aimed at addressing socio-economic vulnerabilities that often contribute to crime.

Residents are now looking to law enforcement agencies to ensure that Cheche’s killers are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted.
