The issuance of university and college bursary cheques for the 2026 academic year has officially commenced in Kajiado North Constituency, with hundreds of beneficiaries receiving financial support through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).
The exercise, which kicked off at the Assistant County Commissioner’s offices in Rongai, is expected to benefit vulnerable students pursuing higher education in universities and colleges across the country.
Kajiado North Member of Parliament Onesmus Ngogoyo said the constituency has allocated Sh15 million towards the bursary programme to support needy learners and ensure they continue with their education without financial interruptions.
Speaking during the launch, Ngogoyo emphasized the importance of investing in education, noting that access to learning opportunities was key to improving livelihoods and securing a better future for young people.
“We want every child to have an equal opportunity to access education regardless of their background. Education remains one of the most effective tools for transforming lives,” said the MP.
Ngogoyo noted that his office has consistently prioritised the education sector through infrastructure development and bursary support. He revealed that two schools have already been completed within the constituency, while plans are underway to construct a third institution.
The MP explained that the bursary issuance exercise is being conducted in phases, with university students and college students receiving their cheques separately to ensure smooth and efficient distribution.
Under the programme, beneficiaries receive partial scholarships that cater to part of their tuition fees and related educational expenses. The amount awarded varies depending on whether the student is enrolled in a university or a middle-level college.
According to Ngogoyo, the bursary initiative has supported more than 21,000 students over the past four years, enabling many learners from vulnerable families to access higher education and improve their employment prospects.
However, officials managing the NG-CDF programme cited several challenges affecting implementation, including delays by some beneficiaries in submitting receipts required for accountability during government audits.
They also expressed concern over cases where beneficiaries fail to cash their cheques on time, resulting in stale cheques that cannot be processed.
Ngogoyo further acknowledged the challenge of unemployment among graduates and said the constituency plans to absorb some young people into ICT programmes through five digital hubs already established in Kajiado North.
He expressed optimism that the bursary programme will continue empowering students to complete their studies and contribute positively to society.
