Migori County Commissioner (CC), Kisilu Mutua, has directed all sub-county security teams and Ministry of Education (MOE) officers to conduct inspections in schools across the region to ensure compliance with the Ministry of Education’s School Safety Manual.
Speaking during the Madaraka Day celebrations at Masaba in Kuria West Sub-county, Mutua ordered the stakeholders to begin a crackdown on the local boarding schools to ensure they adhere to all the necessary existing education regulations, citing the increased fire incidents and unrest in schools.
“We can’t continue losing our children because of mere negligence; all sub-county security teams must now wake up to the task of protecting schools from immoral learners taking advantage of negligence from school principals, school boards, education officials, and teachers,” he stressed.
Mutua cautioned parents and teachers to take an active role in their children’s upbringing to better their character and moral development.
“What happened at Utumishi School in Gilgil made us realize how much it is necessary to take keen interest in the development and care of the children,” he added.
The CC cautioned chiefs from soliciting or accepting bribes from members of the public in exchange for government services, adding that all services are free except the known ones, which are handled in the Huduma Centre.
“Government services offered at the local level are free, except for designated services processed through Huduma Centres, and urged residents to report any cases of corruption.”
Mutua expressed concern over escalating robbery and murder cases that are recurring in the Kuria region, especially in the gold mines, stressing the need to bring the cases to a stop.
“We have to change the trajectory of crime in this sub-county; we need to work together and ensure we bring down the crime rate in this region,” says Mutua.
The event was also graced by the Member of Parliament for Kuria West, Mathias Robi, who applauded the national government for continuous support and spearheading development projects in Migori County, including the economic stimulus program (ESP) markets in Kuria West.
“We as a community are grateful that the national government has brought development projects to Kuria West to improve the lives of our people,” says Mathias Robi.
