People with Disabilities (PLWD) from Western Kenya got a major boost when the National Fund for The Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) donated cheques totalling Sh4.2 Million and equipment to them to boost their livelihoods.
During an annual occasion held outside the Western Regional Commissioner’s office in Kakamega on Friday,21 institutions serving PWDs in Kakamega, Bungoma,Busia and Vihiga counties received a cheque grant of 200,000 each while individuals with disabilities received an assortment of income generating equipment.
The support will now assist institutions serving PWDs in increasing activities in their respective regions in line with improving households’ livelihoods for PWDs.
Individual PWD’s received various machines and accessories such as sewing machines, car washing equipment, wheelchairs, embroidery and carpentry equipment among others.
Speaking during the occasion, the Fund’s Board of trustee chairperson Prof. Francis Ndung’u Liberia hailed the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Safaricom Foundation and other well-wishers for their continued support of PWDs.

Long serving board of trustee member Dr. Julia Ojiambo asked beneficiaries to put to good use the equipment they received, saying this will help in improving their livelihoods.
“This support is meant to help beneficiaries become economically reliant, we urge you to use the equipment to improve your livelihoods and create employment opportunities”, she added.
Present were Cecelia Mbaka, chairperson of Audit committee of the Fund and Kenneth Lunalo, who represented the regional Commissioner.
