Twenty-one primary schools and seven secondary schools in Mwatate Sub-County have received textbooks worth Sh3.5 million from the Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB) to support learning and promote a reading culture among local learners.
The donation was made during celebrations to mark the International Literacy Day 2026, held under the theme “Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity”.
The theme highlighted the importance of literacy in a highly globalized world facing common challenges and the need for sustainable, innovative approaches to improve people’s lives.
Speaking during the ceremony, KLB Managing Director, George Okeyo, called on the national and county governments to invest more in educational infrastructure to create an enabling environment for a strong reading culture.
“Both levels of government must invest heavily in educational infrastructure to support our people’s reading culture as part of ensuring no one is left behind by the wheel of prosperity,” said Okeyo.
Taita Taveta County Executive Committee Member for Education, Libraries and Vocational Training Centres, Dishon Mngoda, said the county government was committed to improving education standards by expanding access to learning institutions and providing schools with the necessary equipment and learning materials.
“The county’s administration continues to support the improvement of quality access to education with construction of classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, and provision of equipment to schools across the county,” said Mngoda.
The International Literacy Day celebrations underscored the importance of access to learning resources in strengthening literacy and supporting educational development among children in the county.
