Chuka University officially ushered in its new cohort of First Year students in a colourful matriculation ceremony held at the University’s main pavilion.
Over 9,000 students drawn from across the country were formally admitted to the university after taking the matriculation oath, signifying their full acceptance as members of the university community.
The ceremony was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei, who was flanked by Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Deans, Registrars and members of the University Senate.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated the new students for securing admission to the institution, noting that Chuka University remains one of the most sought-after universities in the country due to its academic excellence and discipline. He also ranked the institution as one of the best and top performing institutions in Kenya.
“You have joined a university of choice. Your admission into this institution marks one of the best steps into the future of academic excellence. This is not just a ceremony; it is a contract. From today, you are bound by the rules, values and academic standards of Chuka University,” said Prof. Mutembei.
He urged the new students to focus on their studies, shun drug abuse, exam cheating and other vices that could derail their academic journey, and to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship.
“Your parents and the government have invested heavily in you. The remaining part is for each individual to open their own academic doors of excellence. The degree you will get will not be given, it will be earned. Attend lectures, respect your lecturers and use the library,” he added.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Research and Student Affairs, Prof. Gilbert Nduru assured the students of the university’s commitment to quality teaching, mentorship and a conducive learning environment.
“We have adequate lecturers, well-equipped labs and hostels. Your job is to learn. Our job is to make you competitive in the job market,” he said.
The matriculation marks the end of the week-long orientation program where students were taken through academic programs, security, health services, HELB, and student welfare.
