NLC engages Mandera residents on land regularisation process

The National Land Commission (NLC) held public hearings on land regularisation in Mandera on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance transparency, accountability, and fairness in land management across all sub-counties in the County.

The exercise brought together residents, local leaders, and stakeholders from various sectors to deliberate on the future of land ownership and allocation within Mandera.

The hearings are part of a broader national framework aimed at addressing irregular land ownership and ensuring compliance with the law.

According to the Commission, the process follows a formal request for regularisation that was approved during the NLC’s 183rd Plenary Meeting.

NLC Commissioner Reginald Okumu who oversaw the hearings added that upon the lapse of the notice period, the Commission received multiple objections and comments from members of the public, civil society organizations, and government agencies

He further acknowledged that the hearings were therefore meant to give all concerned parties an opportunity to clarify their positions, present additional evidence, and seek amicable resolutions.

Mandera CEC for Lands Salah Maalim emphasised that the hearings were part of the Commission’s commitment to uphold justice, inclusivity, and participatory governance in land matters.

He added that regularisation would help restore public confidence in land administration, reduce disputes, and promote sustainable urban development.

Residents welcomed the move, noting that Mandera has long struggled with land ownership disputes and irregular documentation.

They expressed hope that the exercise would provide lasting solutions and open doors for lawful development and investment in the area.

The Commission assured residents that all feedback gathered during the hearings would be carefully reviewed before final recommendations and decisions are made.

The NLC reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that the process remains fair, transparent, and in full compliance with national land laws and policies.

The land regularisation exercise is part of a nationwide effort by the National Land Commission to promote orderly settlement, resolve historical injustices, and strengthen land governance systems in Kenya’s devolved regions.
