Residents laud Sh3.9 billion allocation for village elders

Leaders and residents of Vihiga County have welcomed key proposals contained in the 2026/2027 National Budget, describing them as timely interventions that could improve service delivery and economic opportunities across the country.

Speaking to the Kenya News Agency (KNA) on Sunday, residents from various parts of the county particularly lauded the proposed allocation of Sh3.9 billion for stipends for village elders.

They said the move was long overdue, noting that village elders have for decades played a crucial role in resolving disputes, mobilizing communities, and linking wananchi with government services without any formal remuneration.

The residents observed that the allocation would not only recognize the contribution of village elders to grassroots governance, but also enhance their effectiveness in serving local communities.

The sentiments were echoed by Emuhaya Member of Parliament Omboko Milemba, who described the allocation as a historic step towards strengthening grassroots administration.

Milemba said the absence of remuneration for village elders over the years had affected their effectiveness, adding that their inclusion in the government payroll would improve accountability, motivation, and service delivery, particularly in rural areas.

He urged the government to ensure timely implementation of the programme, saying it would address a long-standing gap in recognizing the contribution of village elders to national development.

Youth in the county also welcomed the increased allocation to the education sector, which has been allocated Sh984.5 billion in the proposed budget.

They expressed optimism that the funding would improve access to colleges and universities, ease the financial burden on students, and enhance the quality of education across the country.

Residents further noted that the budget contains significant allocations to key sectors, including healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture, expressing optimism that the investments would spur development and improve livelihoods.

However, some called for transparency and accountability in the utilization of public funds to ensure the intended benefits reach wananchi at the grassroots level.

They also urged the government to ensure equitable distribution of resources across all counties to address regional disparities and promote inclusive development.

Additionally, residents welcomed increased funding towards entrepreneurship, technical training, and employment creation initiatives, saying unemployment remains one of the greatest challenges facing young people.

They commended the government for prioritizing programmes, aimed at empowering youth and creating sustainable job opportunities, expressing hope that investments in innovation and small businesses would unlock economic opportunities and improve livelihoods.
