PS Omollo orders release of impounded motor cycles

Internal Security and National Administration PS Dr. Raymond Omollo has directed the immediate release of all motorcycles impounded over petty offences, saying the move is aimed at strengthening cooperation between the government and boda boda operators.

Speaking during a boda boda stakeholders’ forum at the Vihiga County Commissioner’s Residence on Friday, Dr Omollo said the directive applies only to motorcycles detained for minor offences and urged operators to comply with the law going forward.

“All motorcycles held at police stations on account of petty offences should be released,” the PS ordered.

However, he  cautioned operators that the government would strictly enforce compliance with transport and security regulations in future.

The PS urged boda boda riders to ensure they have valid insurance cover and to register under recognised associations to enhance accountability and help security agencies identify criminal elements infiltrating the sector.

“If you do not have insurance, make sure you obtain it. If you are not registered under an association, ensure you register so that you are known and criminals can easily be identified,” he said.

The PS also called for stronger collaboration between boda boda operators and security agencies to improve peace and security across the county.

“Have a good relationship with security officers, government administrators and all relevant authorities. During the security meeting we held earlier in Emuhaya, we agreed to organize regular meetings so that we remain informed on what is happening at all times,” he said.

Dr. Omollo described the boda boda industry as a key contributor to the country’s transport sector and economy, noting that operators play a critical role in supporting security agencies through information sharing and community policing.

“The boda boda sector is very important in this country. You play a significant role in the transport sector and in supporting security efforts. Continue working closely with our security officers so that together we can maintain a safe and secure county,” he added.

His remarks followed concerns raised by boda boda leaders from various sub-counties over increasing insecurity facing riders, including cases of attacks and killings. The leaders also appealed to the national government to support the sector financially to improve livelihoods.

The forum came barely two months after a crackdown on motorcycles in Luanda Sub-County sparked violent protests and road blockades after police impounded motorcycles in an operation targeting theft syndicates.

Among those present were Western Regional Commissioner Jeremiah Gicheru, Vihiga County Commissioner Allan Machari, Vihiga Member of Parliament Ernest Ogesi, Kakamega Deputy Governor, Luanda Member of Parliament Dick Maungu and other national and county government leaders.
