Kajiado County joined the rest of the country in celebrating Ushirika Day, with leaders calling on more residents to join cooperative societies to improve their economic well-being and promote financial inclusion.
The celebrations were held under the global theme, “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World.” Cooperative societies from across the county, including dairy cooperatives, beadwork (shanga) cooperatives, egg-producing cooperatives and SACCOs, showcased their products and services, highlighting the role cooperatives play in improving livelihoods.
Kajiado County has more than 1,200 registered cooperative societies, which continue to support members through savings, access to credit and income-generating activities.
Speaking during the celebrations, Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku encouraged residents to join SACCOs, saying they help people save money, access affordable loans and reduce financial challenges.
The Governor also announced that the county government will disburse Sh51 million to cooperative societies across the county in the second week of July.
He said the funds will be shared among different cooperatives to support their growth and improve services to members.
Leaders of cooperative societies appealed to the county government to review and reduce some of the licensing requirements, saying this would make it easier for cooperatives to operate and expand their services.
Kajiado County Executive Committee Member for Cooperatives, Jeremiah ole Ncharo, urged cooperative societies to uphold accountability and proper financial management and advised SACCOs to make use of county auditors to strengthen transparency and ensure members’ funds are well managed.
Stakeholders also commended the County Department of Cooperatives for its continued efforts in supporting the growth of cooperative societies and empowering communities across Kajiado County.
The celebrations ended with a renewed commitment by both the county government and cooperative societies to work together in strengthening the cooperative movement as a key driver of economic growth and community development.
