Vihiga strengthens TVET training through CBET capacity building programme

The County Government of Vihiga, in partnership with Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic (KFNP) and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Authority, is conducting a week-long capacity building programme on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) for TVET officers and Vocational Training Centre (VTC) trainers.

The programme seeks to strengthen the implementation of competency-based training by equipping participants with practical skills in curriculum delivery, competency-based assessment, occupational standards and quality assurance to improve the quality of technical and vocational education across the county.

Speaking during the training at Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic, Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a key driver of skills development, employment creation and economic transformation.

The Governor noted that the week-long training, organised jointly by the County Government of Vihiga, Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic and the TVET Authority, has brought together TVET officers and VTC trainers from across the county.

The programme, which commenced on Monday, was officially opened by Deputy Governor Wilberforce Kitiezo on behalf of Governor Ottichilo. It focuses on equipping trainers with practical knowledge and skills in CBET implementation, modularised curricula, competency-based assessment, occupational standards and quality assurance in TVET delivery.

Governor Ottichilo said his administration will continue investing in Vocational Training Centres to improve the quality of technical education and equip young people with market-driven skills.

He said the county government plans to increase funding for scholarships and bursaries while strengthening TVET programmes to enhance access to quality technical training.

“The future of our youth lies in technical and vocational education. We are committed to transforming our Vocational Training Centres into centres of excellence capable of producing competent and skilled graduates who can effectively compete in the job market,” the Governor said.

He also called for continuous capacity building for trainers, noting that regular CBET training is essential in equipping instructors with modern skills and knowledge that can be effectively transferred to learners.

The Governor emphasised that strengthening TVET institutions is central to addressing youth unemployment and promoting self-reliance through practical skills development.

He further noted that the county government will continue collaborating with national institutions and development partners to ensure effective implementation of CBET programmes and improve training standards.

The training, which ends on Friday, is expected to enhance the implementation of Competency-Based Education and Training in Vihiga County and improve the quality of technical and vocational education, thereby producing a skilled workforce to support the county’s socio-economic development.
