PS Kiptoo urges farmers to embrace high-value crops and self-reliance

Farmers in Kenya have been advised to embrace modern farming practices, strive for economic self-reliance and adopt clean energy as key drivers of improved and sustainable livelihoods.

Speaking during a Sunday Mass at Kabuliot Catholic Church, Moiben Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County, Principal Secretary (PS) for the National Treasury, Dr. Chris Kiptoo, called on farmers to improve their livestock breeds to increase milk production and household incomes.

“We must embrace a culture of hard work and self-reliance. Instead of depending on handouts from politicians, let us invest in productive activities that will improve our livelihoods and secure a better future for our families,” said Dr. Kiptoo.

The PS encouraged farmers to diversify from overreliance on maize farming by venturing into high-value crops such as avocado, macadamia and coffee, noting that the crops offer better returns and can significantly improve household incomes.

“I urge our farmers to improve their livestock breeds and embrace high-value crops such as avocado, macadamia and coffee. Agricultural diversification is the surest way to increase incomes and transform the economic well-being of our communities,” he said.

Dr. Kiptoo further disclosed that the government, in collaboration with local leaders, is planning to desilt water dams and other water sources to improve access to clean and reliable water for households.

He said the initiative would spare women the burden of walking long distances in search of water.

The PS also appealed to households to adopt cleaner sources of energy such as liquefied petroleum gas and electricity instead of relying on firewood, saying this would reduce indoor air pollution and improve the health of families.

“The government is committed to improving access to water through the rehabilitation and desilting of dams and water sources. We are also encouraging families to adopt clean cooking energy such as gas and electricity because it protects our health and conserves the environment,” added Dr. Kiptoo.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wesley Rotich echoed Dr. Kiptoo’s call for farmers to embrace high-value crops saying diversification would enhance agricultural productivity and improve household incomes.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader and Kericho Senator, Aaron Cheruiyot, together with Uasin Gishu Senator, Jackson Mandago, defended the constitutional oversight role of senators, saying the Senate is mandated to hold county governments accountable in the management of public resources.

Senator Cheruiyot called on leaders to resolve their differences through dialogue and mutual understanding, saying unity among leaders is essential for accelerating development.

Other leaders who also attended the function included Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Nominated Senator Prof. Margaret Kamar, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang, Prof. Phyllis Bartoo (MP Moiben), Adams Kipsanai (Keiyo North MP) among other leaders.
