The United Party of Independent Alliance (UPIA), formerly known as Sabasaba Asili Party founded by Kenneth Matiba, on Tuesday held peaceful SabaSaba commemorations in Murang’a County, marking Kenya’s historic pro-democracy struggle for justice and constitutional freedoms.
The party honored the heroes and heroines who courageously fought for reintroduction of multiparty democracy 36 years ago.
Leading the commemoration, UPIA’s National Organizing Secretary, Joe Kanguchu said the nation remains united in paying tribute to the patriots whose sacrifices transformed Kenya’s political landscape and strengthened democratic governance.
He noted that the country continues to honour national heroes led by the late Kenneth Njindo Matiba, alongside other distinguished champions of democracy including Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Charles Rubia, Masinde Muliro, George Nthenge, Martin Shikuku, Kijana Wamalwa, Professor Wangari Maathai, Raila Odinga, among others.
“We honor and remember our national heroes whose contribution will forever remain etched in our nation’s history,” he said.
Kanguchu emphasized that the Saba Saba commemorations hold special significance for UPIA, as the party is rooted in the ideals and vision of Kenneth Matiba, whose belief in democracy and people-driven leadership continues to inspire many Kenyans.
“Today our party remains committed to advocating for all people, to democratic participation and to justice,” Kanguchu said.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its core principle of “Let the People Decide,” noting that UPIA advocates for democratic participation, justice and servant leadership.
Kanguchu added that meaningful change will be driven by strong ideas, good governance, and allowing Kenyans the freedom to elect leaders who reflect their aspirations.
“True democracy can only thrive when Kenyans elect leaders from diverse political backgrounds, when no single political force monopolizes power,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Ali Abdillahi, a former political detainee during the struggle for multiparty democracy, celebrated Kenya’s democracy and honoured the Kenyans who took part in the fight for multiparty democracy.
Ali called upon the government to listen to the concerns of Kenyans, to embrace peace, unity and dialogue. Meanwhile, he strongly castigated political intolerance, violence, abductions and any actions that threaten lives, especially as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.
