The National Government has renewed its commitment to accelerating development in Bomet County following a high-level inspection and verification mission of key national government projects.
The assessment tour was led by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency, Eliud Owalo, who underscored the Kenya Kwanza administration’s drive to fast-track stalled initiatives and enhance service delivery.
Speaking during the inspection tour, Owalo said the exercise was essential in enforcing accountability and ensuring timely completion of critical development programs.
“Our focus is to assess progress, unlock bottlenecks, and ensure the timely delivery of transformative projects that directly impact livelihoods and economic growth. The government remains committed to efficiency, transparency, and restoring stalled projects while initiating new ones for the benefit of the people,” he stated.
Among the major national projects inspected was the Bomet–Longisa–Mulot Water Supply and Sanitation Project, a Sh1.9 billion investment expected to supply clean water to 394,000 households in Bomet county.
Previously, the project stalled due to contractual disputes and was revived in early 2025 through the intervention of President William Ruto, through the Government Delivery Unit (GDU).
The team also assessed the Silibwet–Merigi–Chemaner–Longisa Road, a 75 km corridor linking Bomet, Narok, and Nakuru counties. The Sh2.8 billion project, implemented by KeRRA, was revived in August 2025 following a presidential directive.
Bomet East MP Richard Yegon noted that improving the road network will boost agricultural markets, ease movement, and spur regional economic activity.
Other projects reviewed included the Longisa–Sigor–Kyogong–Kipng’osos Road, currently 26 percent complete; the Sh547 million Chepalungu Affordable Housing Project, which is 97 percent complete; the Sh214.3 million Bomet Airstrip upgrade; and the ultra-modern Bomet University College Library Block, now at 96 percent completion.
However, the visit also exposed serious concerns over delays by the China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Corporation, which is handling both the Silibwet–Merigi–Chemaner–Longisa Road and the Longisa–Sigor–Kyogong Road.
The Deputy Chief of Staff expressed dissatisfaction with the contractor’s capacity and pace of work, warning of severe sanctions if they don’t hasten the pace towards completion.
“We are not convinced that the contractor has enhanced capacity as required. We have cautioned them to up their game,” he said, adding that the company is handling 11 road projects nationwide yet continues to underperform.
He noted that his office will recommend punitive action, including possible debarment from future national contracts.
The delegation included Bomet East MP Yegon, Deputy Governor Shadrack Rotich, Deputy County Commissioner Ms. Flavia Okumu, engineers from KAA and KeRRA, officials from the Water Works Development Agency, and Bomet University College administration.
The inspection signals renewed momentum in restoring stalled projects and advancing government delivery priorities across Bomet County.
