Former councilors, now referred to as Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), have protested being sidelined in retirement benefits, lamenting neglect despite their role in steering county councils during critical moments in Kenya’s governance history.
Led by former Nyalenda A councilor, Isiah Onyango, the group denounced the proposed Sh20,000 monthly stipend as inhumane and a mockery to their past service.
Onyango appealed to Finance Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi to revisit the proposal, saying Parliament should intervene to ensure fairness.
“If former councilors were a greedy lot, much public land and funds would have been lost. A Sh20,000 stipend is still a mockery. Our package should at least mirror what governors receive,” Onyango argued.
Council chairman Jacktone Osodhi, who served two terms in Kisumu, echoed the concerns, stressing that their contributions risk being forgotten if the retirement package is not addressed.
“All former councilors have already resolved in Nairobi that benefits passed in Parliament must be honored and paid. We only demand fairness,” he stated.
The former leaders urged the government to treat them on par with other retired public officers, warning that neglecting their plight amounts to disregarding their service.
