The Tanathi Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA) intends to solarize Mwaani Borehole and Kamunyolo dam at a cost of over Sh50 million to benefit 10,000 households in Wote town and its environs.
The TWWDA chairperson Regina Ndambuki said this on Wednesday at the site of the two projects during an inspection tour where she disclosed that they want to increase the water supply to Wote town by an additional of 600 M3 per day.
Also, the chairperson said that they are doing a 13.5-kilometers pipeline to Kamunyolo scheme Kwa Nganda 100 M3 elevated tanks and another at the Makueni Boys Scheme tanks that will supply water to the town by using the power of gravity.
Further she said that the initiative that is funded through the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and irrigation, will lower operational costs for water by solarizing Kamunyolo Water treatment works to enhance efficiency.
At the same time, MS Ndambuki said that the Mwaani borehole is fully equipped with a submersible pump and solar pumping system that is complete and operational.
“The project is designed to increase water supply to Wote town by an additional 600 M3 per day through the solar -powered equipment of Mwaani borehole,” said Ms. Ndambuki while inspecting the projects.
“Also, the work of a 13.5 kilometer pipeline has commenced. The initiative aims at lowering the operational costs for Wote Water Sanitation Company by solarizing the Kamunyolo treatment works. It will enhance efficiency by replacing existing UPVC rising main, reducing non-revenue water and strengthening monitoring distribution with bulk water meters and two motorbikes,” she added.
The project is valued at Sh 50.6 million and the works commenced on 30th June 2025, and it is supposed to be completed by December 30, 2025.
The chairperson revealed that the installation of solar power at Kamunyolo will be completed within a month while adding that she is happy with the progress that is at 75 percent complete.
She observed that the investment reflects the commitment the government has to provide reliable, sustainable, and affordable water supply to the residents of Makueni County.
