Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has launched emergency grading works on the Shianda–Malaha–Navakholo–Samitsi road to ease transport challenges for residents of Navakholo and Mumias East.
The works, which began at Mukhweso Junction, will cover Kaunda and Malaha markets up to Bumini.
The Governor said the intervention is meant to restore accessibility on a vital route that had become nearly impassable.
“This is a National Government road, but due to its poor state, I have stepped in as an emergency measure to ease the burden on our people,” Barasa said in Mumias.
He noted that the road is critical for farmers transporting sugarcane and other produce, as well as traders accessing local markets.
Poor road conditions, he added had led to high transport costs, delays and losses for small-scale farmers who rely on timely delivery of their goods.
Residents and business people welcomed the move, saying it would open up the corridor for trade and improve livelihoods. “We have waited for this for years. It will now be easier to take farm produce to markets without damage or high costs,” said a trader at Malaha Market.
The Governor emphasized that his administration will continue to prioritize infrastructure that directly supports economic activity even where mandates overlap with the National Government.
The grading works are expected to ease mobility, enhance commerce and support growth in one of Kakamega’s most productive agricultural belts.
