Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General (SG), Francis Atwoli, has urged the supporters of the late former Prime Minister and ODM leader Raila Odinga, to remain calm during this mourning period of their fallen hero in honour of his legacy.
Speaking after having a light moment with the family to give his condolence message and pay tribute to a longtime friend, Atwoli described the many times the late Raila was forced to forego his personal glory, as a sacrifice for the sake of the state.
Atwoli urged supporters to be calm and accommodate all leaders, noting that Raila was a Statesman and they are anticipating leaders from across all political divides and other dignitaries across the world.
“I know this is the most difficult moment for the members of the ODM family and Raila supporters across the country. However, I urge all who will be travelling to come and give Baba last respect to exercise tolerance and accommodate all with divergent opinions, Raila loved all,” said Atwoli.
Atwoli expressed gratitude to President William Ruto and his Administration for recognising the former Prime Minister’s immense contribution to the nation.
“I can tell you for free that the government, having declared this morning to be a State Funeral, I want to take this opportunity and very highly thank His Excellency the President and his government,” he said.
He applauded members of the Fourth Estate for the dedication they have demonstrated by ensuring the nation is informed of all the proceedings, since the demise of late former Prime Minister, Raila.
“I want to sincerely appreciate the members of the Fourth Estate for your dedication to provide coverage in all news streams,” he said.
Atwoli hinted at the possibility of his exit in political engagement, noting that he has also served the nation to the best of his knowledge and ability.
