A somber mood gripped Kisumu town this morning as residents thronged the streets to mourn the late former Prime Minister and political icon, Raila Amolo Odinga.
The chopper bearing his remains landed at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mamboleo, at around 8.45 a.m. where thousands of mourners had gathered since early morning. As the casket was offloaded, the crowd erupted into emotional chants of “Jowi! Jowi!”, a traditional Luo expression of honor and mourning for a fallen hero.
The mood inside the stadium was both electric and emotional, with organizers struggling to calm the charged crowd, eager to catch a glimpse of the man fondly referred to as ‘Baba’.
Several dignitaries, including Governors, Members of Parliament, and senior government officials, were present to receive the body. As the event progressed, gospel music filled the air and the crowd sang along.
The late Raila Odinga passed away in India, on Wednesday October 15,2025 while undergoing treatment. His death has thrown the nation into mourning, with the government declaring seven days of national mourning and a public holiday, yesterday, Friday, in his honor.
Security was heightened at the venue as officers worked tirelessly, to manage the swelling crowds and ensure order during the solemn event.
The former Prime Minister will be laid to rest on Sunday at his family home in Bondo, Siaya County.
