Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH) has received a major boost in its emergency and critical care services following a donation of medical equipment by Malteser International (MI).
The consignment, handed over at the facility on Monday, is aimed at strengthening the hospital’s capacity for timely emergency assessment, patient monitoring, resuscitation, oxygen support, airway management, safe patient transfer and stabilization of critically ill patients.
The support forms part of Malteser International’s continued commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the country.
The donated equipment included three rechargeable blood pressure machines, two pressure machines, two pulse oximeters, seven otoscopes, two weighing scales, and two emergency crash carts. The items are expected to enhance timely and accurate assessment of patients requiring urgent medical attention.
The hospital also received 21 bag-valve masks for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients, 280 airway management equipment items, one oxygen concentrator, and 10 oxygen delivery devices, which will significantly improve the management of patients experiencing respiratory distress and other life-threatening conditions.
Further, the donation comprised of two electric suction machines, one manual suction machine, seven nebulization machines, six instrument trolleys, as well as assorted emergency care consumables and accessories.
The equipment is expected to boost efficiency among healthcare workers and strengthen delivery of quality emergency and critical care services.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the hospital management expressed gratitude to Malteser International for the timely support, noting that the donation will greatly enhance the facility’s ability to respond to medical emergencies and improve patient outcomes.
The donation was officially received by Nurse Manager, William Litu alongside a team from the hospital’s Emergency Department.
“This support comes at a critical time and will go a long way in strengthening our emergency response capacity and saving lives,” Litu said, while adding that the equipment will also empower healthcare workers to deliver improved services.
Malteser International has been a key partner in supporting healthcare initiatives in Vihiga County, with the latest donation pointing out its continued commitment to improving access to quality emergency medical services.
The hospital management restated its appreciation for the partnership, noting that such collaborations are vital in enhancing healthcare delivery and saving more lives across the region.
