Wajir Peace Agency trains journalists, digital creators on media’s role in governance

Wajir Peace and Development Agency (WPDA) has trained journalists and digital content creators from Wajir County on responsible media use to promote good governance and public participation.

The one-day seminar was held at Midpoint Hotel in Wajir town and brought together journalists from mainstream media houses, online platforms and social media creators.

The forum focused on the role of traditional and digital media in democratic governance, with emphasis on accurate reporting, verification of information and countering misinformation.

Speaking during the session, WPDA Programme Officer Abdinoor said responsible media use is critical in strengthening accountability and social cohesion.

“Media and digital platforms are powerful tools. When used responsibly, they promote accountability, unity and informed civic participation, but misuse can fuel misinformation and undermine cohesion,” Abdinoor said.

Organisers said the training aimed to equip participants with skills in ethical reporting, constructive criticism and balanced coverage of governance issues, particularly in the digital space.

Veteran journalist and facilitator Abdullah Jamac said the initiative seeks to improve the quality of public discourse rather than limit criticism.

“Our objective is not to silence criticism but to ensure discussions on governance are factual, balanced and solution-orientated so they support development and accountability,” Jamac said.

WPDA said the training was part of a broader programme to strengthen citizen participation and social accountability across Wajir County, adding that similar engagements would be conducted to promote responsible digital engagement and democratic governance.

The training was organised by WPDA in partnership with Forum CIV under the Strengthening Agency for Social Accountability (SASA) project.
