Muslim leaders have described the grand opening of the new Jamia Mosque at Isebania town in Kuria West Sub County as an important milestone for the Migori Muslim community.
Led by the Council of Governors Chair and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, the leaders said that the mosque will play a wider role apart from being a worship centre.
The mosque, located at the border between Kenya and Tanzania, will serve the Muslim community within the region and across the border.
Abdullahi said that the 2010 Kenyan Constitution guarantees freedom of conscience, religion and belief, which has played an essential and integral part in ensuring various religions coexist.
Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko noted that his administration was committed to supporting all communities living in the county to realise development and unity.
“Migori is a cosmopolitan county and coexisting among different communities is paramount for our shared endeavors, unity and prosperity,” he said.
He, however, encouraged the Muslim community in the county to continue investing to create jobs and drive the socio-economic transformative agenda for the betterment of the Migori residents.
Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) and Minority Leader in Parliament Junet Mohamed disclosed that the new mosque will foster unity, teach Islamic knowledge and bring the Muslim community closer.
“I am glad to witness the opening of the new Jamia Mosque, Isebania, which is a great milestone for the Muslim community along the Isebania-Sirare border,” said Junet.
Rashid Omar, a resident of the Isebania area, said that the new mosque will give the Muslim community an avenue to worship, as well as a symbol of togetherness for the Muslim community in the Kuria region.
The event, which concluded with a fund drive for the new mosque, brought together Lafey Member of Parliament (MP) Abdirahman Mohamed, Migori Woman Representative Fatuma Mohamed, Migori Deputy Governor Joseph Mahiri, businessman Abdullahi Kalmoi, sheikhs, imams, Muslim scholars and other local leaders.
