County signs education partnership with Indian varsity

Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo has emphasized the importance of research, science, and technology in driving development and success in higher education institutions.

The Governor made the remarks after witnessing the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between India’s Vignan’s Foundation for Science, Technology, and Research (VFSTR) and local institutions in Vihiga County.

The agreements were signed between VFSTR and Kaimosi Friends University, as well as VFSTR and Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic, during a ceremony held at Kaimosi Friends University.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ottichilo said the partnership would promote academic exchange, joint research, and capacity building in science, technology, and innovation.

“We believe that science and technology are crucial, and research is mandatory for success. Hence, this collaboration will help our institutions improve training quality and enhance students’ employability,” he said.

The Governor noted that the collaboration aligns with the county’s development agenda and urged the institutions to ensure proper implementation of the agreements to realize the intended benefits.

He revealed that he initiated the partnership after visiting Vignan University in India, where he observed its advanced research and training systems.

“I am a scientist by profession, and I fully support this partnership. I want to see tangible results that will positively impact our community,” he added.

Dr. Ottichilo said research plays a critical role in solving community challenges, improving service delivery, and creating employment opportunities for young people.

“Through research, our universities can develop practical solutions in agriculture, health, water management, and environmental conservation. Thus, Science and innovation must guide our development agenda,” said the Governor.

He noted that investment in research and innovation would help Vihiga compete favourably at national and international levels while attracting partnerships and funding opportunities.

The Governor added that his administration is committed to supporting research institutions through policy support, infrastructure development, and collaboration with development partners.

“We must move from theory to practical research that benefits our people. I want to see our institutions producing innovations that address local problems and improve livelihoods,” he said.

Dr. Ottichilo further announced plans to declare Kaimosi a municipality before March, a move he said would help address challenges related to roads, water supply, and security lighting to improve the learning environment.

VFSTR Chief Executive Officer Dr. Srikant Nandigam said the institution was committed to supporting Kenyan institutions through knowledge sharing, technical support, and collaborative programmes.

“Our goal is to strengthen local institutions by sharing expertise and developing joint programmes that benefit both students and staff,” Dr. Nandigam said.

The management of Kaimosi Friends University and Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic welcomed the partnership, saying it would enhance institutional capacity and expose learners to international best practices.

Kaimosi Friends University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peter Nyamuhanga Mwita, encouraged for continued support from the county government and other stakeholders to sustain the collaboration.

He noted that the county’s support had enabled the university to remain stable and progress, including plans to establish a medical school that is expected to have a significant impact on the community.

The Vice-Chancellor also appealed to the county government to install more security lights within the university compound to enhance safety.

The MoUs are expected to facilitate staff and student exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, and the development of innovative training programmes.

The signing marks a significant milestone in Vihiga County’s efforts to expand international partnerships and strengthen the education sector.
