Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has been impeached by County Assembly members after they surpassed the required two third threshold of votes for the impeachment motion to sail through.
The motion of impeachment was moved last week in the County Assembly by Bonyamatuta ward MCA, Julius Matwere accusing Governor Nyaribo of among other ills gross violation of the Constitution of Kenya and abuse of office.
After votes were cast, 23 MCA out of 31 voted in favour of removal of Nyaribo from office.
A debate in the House yesterday, concerning Nyaribo’s impeachment commenced after Nominated MCA John Matunda seconded the motion. At the time MCAs extensively debated why Nyaribo should be removed from the county’s top seat.
“Governor Nyaribo has failed to guard public funds and misappropriated a huge chunk of county resources. He employed a Member of the County assembly for the department of agriculture and senior county employees without approval of the legally approved County Assembly. The Governor further failed to submit annual financial reports and give a public address on the state of the County among other accusations,” MCA Matwere argued.
Nyaribo legal team led by Senior Counsel Zelmar Bonuke responded that all the accusations brought forth by the MCAs against governor Nyaribo were sheer witch-hunt and that all the decisions made by Governor Nyaribo were within his mandate.
Nyaribo however might be saved by the Senate which is supposed to hear and rule over the matter.
