United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate David Ndakwa has been officially declared the new Malava MP-elect after securing 21,564 votes in yesterday’s by-election.
His closest challenger, Seth Panyako of Democratic Alliance Party –K(DAP-K), garnered 20,210 votes. The constituency has 93,417 registered voters.
The seat fell vacant following the death of former MP, the late Moses Injendi.
The announcement of results came after delays triggered by a demand for a recount.
The IEBC later confirmed the final tally and issued Ndakwa with his election certificate.
The by-election recorded low voter turnout and was marred by clashes among rival supporters. One vehicle was set on fire. Police officers were deployed to restore order.
Ndakwa previously served as Kabras West MCA and Kakamega County Minority Leader, completing three consecutive terms before contesting the parliamentary seat.
His rival, Seth Panyako, is the outspoken Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN).
In his acceptance speech, Ndakwa lauded the people of Malava and said he is ready to work with all leaders to ensure inclusive and sustainable development in the constituency.
