A man suspected to be involved in theft of motorbikes in Chavakali was lynched after irate members of the public cornered and beat him up fatally over the allegations.
According to Assistant Chief Kisatiru Sub Location in West Sabatia, Clarence Imbamba said the furious members of the public spotted the deceased with one of the missing motorbikes in town before giving him a chase to his death at around 10 am
.” According to the report he received the deceased aged about 28 and 29 years is called Moses Agufana the son of Milton from Wodonga Nabwani area in Sabatia Sub County, “ he said.
The assistant chief said that Agufana was found with a stolen motorbike and was running away before he was apprehended at Iguhu in Kakamega County by furious members of the public who brought him back to Chavakali junction stage where the motorbike is believed to have been stolen and was set on fire.
He added that upon inquiring more about Agufana’s conduct from residents of his home area, they confirmed that he is used to stealing motorbikes and terrorizing people and they had gotten tired of his behavior.
Imbamba said that upon reaching the scene at 11am he found Agufana still fighting for his life, he called the OCS Chavakali to come and try to rescue him but when the police arrived unfortunately Agufana succumbed to death.
He added that the body has been moved to Vihiga County Referral Hospital Funeral home awaiting postmortem.
He cautioned those involved in criminal activities especially stealing motorbikes, attacking and killing the operators that their days are numbered.
He cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their hands saying that if they find criminals or suspects they arrest them and hand them over to security agents and allow them to charge them in the court of law.
He said that they have sensitized boda-boda operators to prioritize their security and safety first by avoiding to work late into the night and carrying strangers at night saying some criminals pose as customers and in the long run attack the riders, steal from them and even kill them.
“If you do not know your customer do not carry him or her as this can pose a threat to you,” warned Imbamba.
This comes as cases of motorbike theft, attack and killing of the bodaboda riders has been on the rise in the recent past.
