West Pokot governor refutes illegal gold mining claims

West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin has moved to address mounting concerns from residents of Lami Nyeusi, Kambi Karaya and other parts of West Pokot County over ongoing illegal gold mining activities.

Speaking in Kapenguria amid growing public anxiety, the governor acknowledged that concerns have intensified, with community members expressing fears about how their land and natural resources are being utilised.

Kachapin stated that the county government has not issued any consent or authorisation to individuals or groups purporting to be mining gold in the affected areas. He categorically distanced the county administration from the operations, saying it does not recognise the investors currently carrying out mining activities in Lami Nyeusi, Kambi Karaya or any other part of the county.

He further clarified that the county government has not participated in, approved or benefited from any illegal mining ventures.

The governor cited the Mining Act, noting that it clearly outlines the procedures and requirements for conducting mining activities. He emphasised that any mining operation must strictly adhere to the law and involve all key stakeholders, including the national and county governments as well as local communities, within a structured and legally established framework.

To address the situation, Kachapin revealed that he has directed the relevant county department to urgently develop a bill or policy aimed at streamlining mining activities in West Pokot. The proposed framework, he said, will promote transparency, accountability and proper coordination in the sector while safeguarding community interests.

Kachapin also raised concerns about the impact of the alleged illegal mining, saying the activities have negatively affected infrastructure such as roads and schools, and posed risks to vital natural resources including water points.

He assured residents that the county government remains committed to protecting public resources and ensuring that any future mining activities comply fully with the law and deliver tangible benefits to local communities.
