Malindi Member of Parliament (MP), Amina Mnyazi, has urged Coast residents to boost their voter numbers ahead of the 2027 General Election, warning that without adequate numbers at the ballot, the region risks marginalization.
Noting that the 2027 politics will be about how many votes a region can put on the table, Mnyazi lamented that while other regions boast millions of votes, the Coast region collectively holds a paltry 1.9 million.
This disparity, she noted, had left the region politically vulnerable, as its leaders cannot confidently bargain for a bigger stake in the national political arena.
“Every region is thumping its chest about the votes it commands. The Central say they have seven million, the Luhya five million, and the Kamba five or three million. But we at the Coast have only 1.9 million. How can we boast with that?” she posed.
Ms. Mnyazi was speaking Wednesday after laying the foundation stone for the construction of the Goshi Chief’s Office in Kakuyuni Ward in her constituency. The construction will be funded by the Malindi National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
The legislator vowed to intensify grassroots mobilization, declaring her ambition to see the coast double its voter numbers to respectable levels.
“Very soon I will go to the grassroots. I want that when others say they have two million votes, I, too, can stand and say Coast has four million. The politics of 2027 will be about how many votes you can put on the table. Our strength is in our votes, and when we have many, we shall not be despised,” she affirmed.
Kakuyuni Ward Representative Morris Hinzano warned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to desist from politics of hate and tribalism, saying Kenya must remain as one indivisible nation in which every community is valued.
