Women in Uasin Gishu County have been urged to turn out in large numbers for politics and vie for various leadership positions in order to increase their participation in national and development-related decision-making.
Led by Kapsaos Ward representative aspirant Sarah Abdi, the women noted that many are still afraid to engage in politics due to the rise of gangs allegedly used to disrupt political rallies.
Speaking during a fundraising event to support women’s groups in the Maili Nne area, the participants stated that security concerns during political rallies have contributed to a decline in the number of women venturing into leadership.
Former Kapsaos Ward representative Hosea Lamai expressed concern over the rising incidents of citizens being beaten and robbed of their property during political rallies, emphasizing that the situation threatens the safety of women, children, and the public at large.
The leaders also warned that the persistence of rowdy politics could incite unrest as the country heads towards the next general election, while urging politicians to embrace a culture of tolerance, peace, and respect for political differences.
The residents also commended the Kenya Kwanza government for continuing to empower women with leadership opportunities through appointments, emphasizing the importance of increasing their participation in decision-making roles.
