Kwale Senior High School has emerged as the top-performing institution in the Coast region following its outstanding performance in the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, with leaders attributing the success to sustained investment in education and collaborative governance.
The School is celebrating after 403 candidates attained grades qualifying them for admission to local and international universities, cementing its position as one of the country’s leading public schools.
Speaking during the school’s academic celebration and prize giving ceremony, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, lauded the Institution for its exemplary performance, saying it had become a symbol of educational transformation in Kwale County.
“The achievements by Kwale Senior High School demonstrate that investment in education yields results. Our goal as a country is to equip our children with the skills and competitiveness required in a global economy,” said Mvurya.
The Cabinet Secretary noted that the National Government had continued to prioritize education through increased funding, recruitment of teachers and expansion of learning infrastructure across the country.
He said President William Ruto’s Administration had employed more than 100,000 teachers and invested heavily in classrooms and other educational facilities to support the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
“Kenya cannot transition into a first world economy without investing in its people. Education remains the bridge that will take our nation to greater prosperity,” he added.
Mvurya also announced additional support for the Institution, revealing that the National government would provide Sh5 million towards ongoing development projects at the school, in addition to a Sh2 million donation from President Ruto.
Kwale Governor, Fatuma Achani, attributed the school’s success to strategic partnerships between the County government, parents, teachers and the National government, saying sustained investment in education was transforming the lives of young people across the County.
She said the County government’s ‘Elimu ni Sasa’ scholarship programme had played a pivotal role in keeping needy learners in school, with bursary allocations growing significantly over the years.
“We have increased our bursary allocation to Sh500 million because education is the greatest gift we can give our children. Through the ‘Elimu ni Sasa’ programme, we are equipping them with the knowledge and skills to pursue opportunities, anywhere in the world,” said Achani.
The Governor disclosed that more than Sh175 million had been disbursed to support students at Kwale Senior High School, noting that at least 16 beneficiaries of the scholarship programme are among those joining university this year.
She defended continued investment in education amid criticism from some quarters that county governments should prioritize employment opportunities, saying education provides young people with the foundation to pursue careers beyond county jobs.
“When a child receives education, they receive a shield that will help them compete and succeed wherever opportunities arise. Our responsibility is to ensure that no child is denied education because of financial constraints,” she said.
Kwale Senior High School Chief Principal, Michael Mutua, thanked both levels of government for their support, saying investments in scholarships and infrastructure had significantly contributed to the school’s impressive performance.
“The scholarship programme has enabled many students to remain in school and complete their studies. We are grateful to all our partners for believing in our vision and investing in the future of our learners,” said Mutua.
The celebrations, which also saw the commissioning of a new tuition block and the handover of a water bowser funded through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), were attended by Members of Parliament, Kassim Tandaza, (Matuga), Feisal Bader (Msambweni), Mangale Chiforomodo (Lunga Lunga), Gonzi Rai (Kinango) and Kenga Mupe (Rabai), alongside county leaders, education officials and parents.
Leaders at the event challenged students to maintain the school’s high academic standards while urging stakeholders to continue supporting initiatives aimed at expanding access to quality education.
Kwale Senior High School’s elevation to national school status and its latest KCSE performance have been hailed as milestones in the county’s education sector, underscoring the impact of sustained public investment and collaborative leadership.
