Kirinyaga Central Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in partnership with Kirinyaga Central NG-CDF has launched a new youth empowerment programme targeting practical and marketable skills, with 385 trainees joining as the first cohort.
The trainees will undergo training in Nail Technology, Cabro Fixing and CCTV Camera Installation, courses that have been identified as having strong potential for self-employment and job creation within the county.
The programme will be implemented by the TVC and delivered at the Ward level to make training accessible to young people across the constituency.
Speaking during the orientation at CDF Hall in Kerugoya Town, leaders overseeing the programme said the initiative is designed to equip young people with hands-on skills that respond to current local market demands.
They noted that many youths face limited formal employment opportunities, making technical and vocational training an important pathway to economic independence.
Benson Munene, deputy principal Kirinyaga Central TVC, said it is an honor to have and support the youth who have applied for a training course. He revealed that in September they will have another cohort of students that will be taken through the training.
“In September, we will have other students who will apply for training courses such as camera fixing and so on,” Munene noted.
The deputy principal thanked Kirinyaga Central NG-CDF office, which mobilized for registration of youths from all four wards within the constituency. “They have helped us a lot. They have helped the youth who have not been able to apply for training courses and others who have been struggling to get trained,” Munene added.
The initiative is expected to promote entrepreneurship among the trainees, enabling them to start small businesses, and offer services within their communities.
The ward-based approach is also expected to reduce transport costs for trainees and encourage greater participation from young people who might otherwise be unable to access vocational training.
The training centres have been designated at Kagumo CCM Primary School for youths from Mutira Ward. Youths in Inoi Ward will be trained at Thaita Primary School, in Kerugoya Ward at St. Joseph Primary School and those from Kanyekiine Ward will be trained at Kirinyaga Central TVC.
The first cohort marks the beginning of a broader effort to strengthen technical skills development and improve livelihoods across Kirinyaga Central through youth-focused empowerment programmes.
