The national government has distributed desktop computers to digital hubs in Nyakach Constituency, Kisumu County, in a move aimed at expanding access to digital tools, skills training and online employment opportunities for young people.
The computers were delivered under the Jitume Digital Enablement Programme, a flagship initiative of the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) that seeks to improve digital access and strengthen ICT capacity across the country.
Speaking during the handover, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Children Welfare and Social Protection, Carren Ageng’o, urged youth in Nyakach to take full advantage of the programme to unlock opportunities in the digital and creative economy.
“The national government is working closely with Members of Parliament to ensure digital hubs are equipped with the necessary tools so that our youth can improve their digital literacy and access online job opportunities both locally and internationally,” she said.
Nyakach Member of Parliament Aduma Owuor described the donation as a major milestone in efforts to expand digital access, empower youth with ICT skills and create opportunities for innovation, learning and employment.
“We have received a consignment of computers for three of our five ICT hubs as we continue implementing our vision of establishing one ICT hub in every ward across Nyakach Constituency,” said Owuor.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide through the establishment of modern ICT hubs equipped with the infrastructure required to support digital learning and entrepreneurship.
The Jitume Youth Digital Empowerment Centres form part of the government’s broader Digital Superhighway Programme, which aims to equip young people with the skills, technology and resources needed to participate effectively in the digital economy.
Established by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy in partnership with Konza Technopolis Development Authority and the ICT Authority, the centres are designed to prepare learners for technology-driven careers and online work opportunities.
The hubs are equipped with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure workstations and high-speed fibre internet, creating an enabling environment for digital learning, innovation and entrepreneurship.
In addition to basic digital literacy training, the centres offer programmes in software development, data analytics, content creation and other emerging digital skills.
Through mentorship initiatives such as the Ajira Digital Programme and collaborations with industry partners, beneficiaries are expected to access global freelance platforms and earn income through online work.
