The Garissa County Rural and Urban Affordable Housing Committee is set to begin operations following the swearing-in of its four members at the County Headquarters in Garissa town on Thursday.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Nathif Jama congratulated the new members and urged them to serve with dedication, integrity and excellence in advancing the county’s affordable housing agenda.
Jama urged the committee to familiarise itself with the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2019, and the Affordable Housing Act, 2024, which provide the legal framework for its operations.
The Affordable Housing Act, 2024, provides for the establishment of a County Rural and Urban Affordable Housing Committee to coordinate, oversee and facilitate affordable housing initiatives at the county level.
The committee is expected to support the implementation of housing programmes aimed at expanding access to decent and affordable homes for residents of Garissa town and the county.
The new committee comprises Abdi Ali Owsahal, Non-Executive Chairperson, and members Mohamed Abdi Ahmed, Magol Muhiyadin and Bishara Elyas Jilaow.
The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by Garissa Chief Magistrate Thomas Mwangi.
