Laikipia residents have been urged to maintain peace and avoid politically instigated violence, as campaigns intensify ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu, speaking during the launch of the Nanyuki Bus Park, cautioned residents against allowing political affiliations to divide them, saying disagreements over politics should not lead to animosity and conflict among the local residents.
“On August 10, 2027, elections will be held here in Nanyuki and everywhere else; the day will end and people will remain together just like any other day. Everyone will return to their homes, and those elected will assume office, so everyone needs to be respected regardless of their political stand,” urged the governor.
Irungu urged residents to embrace peaceful co-existence and avoid engaging in activities that could result in destruction of property, injuries, or loss of lives.
“If you hear anyone say one term or two terms, respect their stand since everyone has their own reason and persuasions; there is no need of hatred and suspicion. We should uphold peace and harmony as residents for us to unite and prosper,” said Irungu.
The governor warned that political chaos would only undermine development and destroy the country, calling on residents to safeguard the peace and stability enjoyed in the region.
His remarks come amid heightened political tensions and reports of chaos in parts of the country, with some incidents resulting in destruction of property and loss of lives.
Irungu called on political leaders and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect one another, despite their political differences.
